Our confidential STD screening services include a sexual history and physical exam. Throughout the screening, our providers will explain the process and answer any questions you might have regarding your sexual health.
For females, the physical exam includes a vaginal exam, requiring the use of a speculum. The clinician will use a swab to obtain a sample of your vaginal secretions. This sample will be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea, at a state contracted lab. A second swab of vaginal secretions will be viewed under a microscope, by our clinician, to assess for vaginitis.
For males, the physical exam is a totally external exam of the male genitalia. During the exam, the clinician is assessing for signs of STD related skin and/or glandular abnormalities that may be associated with STD infection. Males are required to provide a urine sample, which will be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea at a state contracted lab.
For both males and females, the physical exam includes assessment of the mouth, throat, and lymph glands for signs or symptoms of infection.
In order to test for syphilis, we must obtain a blood sample from all patients. This sample is sent to a state contracted lab for testing.
At the conclusion of your screen, you will be given an appointment to return (in approximately one week) for your test results and a brief prevention counseling session.
